19. Newton, Iowa to Oacoma, South Dakota

Thursday, July 31

With only a few days until the wedding in Miles City, Montana,

we needed to continue west across Iowa and then angle up into South Dakota.

Along the way, we collected postcards and mementos of the state.

The focus of the day would be visiting my grandfather's (Hiram Collins)

gravesite in Alton Iowa and the nearby St. Mary Catholic Church.

From there we could continue northwest. No trip to South Dakota

would be complete without a trip to the Corn Palace at Mitchell

and dinner at the Happy Chef. We were fortunate to eat

at the Happy Chef before it closed. The Happy Chef

icon ended up in the local landfill a few years later.
