1. Yuba City to Ely Nevada

Sunday, July 13

After church on Saturday in Yuba City, we loaded our Sea Breeze RV and hooked up our new Saturn behind it for an early start on Sunday morning, I had reserved RV stops with swimming pools and full hook-ups across the U.S. and back (7,609 miles).

I had also researched places to visit including a favorite stop for each of us (Maggie: Chicago to see Michael Jordan's statue; Ellen: Georgetown to see a great university and home of a great basketball power; Joe: Gettysburg to see the famous battlefield; Barbara: Alamosa Colorado to see her birthplace; Jim: Newton, NJ to see my college campus after 30 years). We planned a big circle from Yuba City in the west to Kennebunkport, Maine on the east coast. On the return trip we would head back to Miles, Montana for a wedding before the final journey back to Yuba City. Along the way we would pass through most of the central and northern states, visit a few relatives and friends, and take in a variety of popular tourist destinations and traps.

Our three week cross country adventure began on on Sunday July 13. The plan was to travel due east from Yuba City to Reno and then to take the "Loneliest Road in America" (Highway 50) from Carson City to Ely, Nevada.

The only stop was at Middlegate Station on the historic Pony Express trail:

The Prospector Casino, swimming pool, and RV park in Ely were a welcome sight after a long drive on the loneliest road.

Next: Ely to Cortez, Colorado
