17. Wendover to Sacramento, California
Thankful that the sun was at our backs and that we had gained an hour from the change in time zones, we faced our final day of driving. The road seemed almost deserted that Wednesday morning. We cars or trucks were starting the day's journey from Wendover. Cruise control took us most of the way home. After a final stop for gas at Boomtown outside of Reno we were back in familiar territory crossing the Sierras and cruising downhill to Sacramento.
When we arrived home, Barbara's first thoughts were about plants that she left inside the dark house for seventeen days. We were both surprised that they made it so long without water or much light. The orchid liked the dark and bloomed a few weeks later.
We had also survived seventeen days of travel but had memories of new places, special visits with relatives, and an expanded list of states that we have driven through (all but North Dakota and Alaska). Looking forward to more adventures as we recall this road trip.
