11. Asheville to Nashville to Hopkinsville, Kentucky
On Day Eleven we planned to take I-40 from Asheville, near Dan and Carol's, to meet their daughter, Christa, and Christa's daughter, Hannah, for lunch in Nashville, Tennessee. As we approached Nashville, Christa called to let us know that Hannah was ill and that she didn't want to expose us to her illness. Hopefully, we will meet them again when everyone is well.
Dan and Carol promised us a scenic drive through North Carolina and into Tennessee. We weren't disappointed as we drove on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains and crossed the Appalachian Trail as we entered Tennessee. We savored the mountain views knowing that it would be a few days before we would see more mountain passes in the Rocky Mountains. We followed creeks and rivers along the way and could see lakes and mountain peaks in the distance. We were out of the mountains by the time we reached Nashville and turned northwest on Highway 24 towards Hopkinsville, Kentucky. We decided to spend the night there to rest up for the next day's adventure.
