1. Sacramento to Simi Valley
Day One: It all started on June 13.
Barbara and I were on the road from Sacramento to Simi Valley by eight in the morning. We were on a mission to help Jennifer and her four kids move to McKinney Texas. Since it would have been difficult if not impossible for Steve to drive the Budget rental moving truck, I volunteered for the job. Jennifer had reserved a 24 foot truck. By the time we arrived in Simi Valley the rental company couldn’t find a 24 foot truck, so it gave her a free upgrade to a 26 foot diesel monster which was a blessing since all of her belongings would not have fit in the 24 footer.
We met Jennifer at the Budget rental office so that I could drive the truck back to her home. She had hired three professional movers to load the truck so that none of us would need to do that back breaking work. Jennifer and I made a trip in her Honda Pilot to the dump before the movers arrived. They worked continuously until about 8 o’clock to fit everything into the rig while everyone else helped clean the house in hopes of getting back some of the rental deposit. By nine o’clock we were settled into the Grand Vista Hotel for the night where I parked the truck for the next day’s journey.
