3. Cortez to LaJunta, Colorado
Tuesday, July 15
Tuesday was Colorado day. We would travel southern Colorado from Cortez to Alamosa to see Barbara's birth place. The canyons and rock formations of Utah gave way to the Rocky Mountains and mountain towns like Pagosa Springs. After crossing the Continental Divide, we drove descended from the mountains to the sand dunes of Alamosa then continued on to the plains of eastern Colorado and LaJunta.
When we stopped in Pagosa Springs for post cards, we found out that Pahgosa is the Ute Indian word for boiling water:
We saw the boiling springs that made the town famous before climbing the Continental Divide to Wolf Creek Pass. There we hiked to some waterfalls before going down the mountain to Alamosa.
