Alaska Native Heritage Center
August 6:
After leaving the lodge in the morning, we drove towards Anchorage and stopped at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. By the time we arrived, it was clear that Barbara had caught whatever had made me sick. Still, we watched native games and dances in the Gathering Place:
Afterwards, we toured the Hall of Cultures, then wandered around a lake that featured houses and village sites representing eleven major Alaskan cultural groups.
We only lasted a few hours because of illness and recovery from illness. It could have been an all-day experience. Pictures, memories, and brochures will suffice for now. I was impressed with the peaceful ways of the natives over thousands of years.
By dinner time we were ready for something bland, easy on the stomach. We found a Denny's nearby, the 'Northernmost Denny's in North America'.
Cheesy potato soup and cheesier grilled cheese were hardly bland but provided some nourishment. By the time we reached our second Expedia 'apartment', the Qupqugiaq Inn (try to pronounce that one!) we were bushed. Despite the street noise of West 36th Street, we conked out from 5:30 pm to 6:00 am the next morning.
