CAMP FIRE 2019

Camp Fire recovery continues. Our lives are interrupted by demolition and construction activities and enriched by family and church activities. We are blessed by occasional trips away from Paradise for rest and renewal. Click text highlighted in red for more pictures and stories.

January 1: A day of thanksgiving that nearly two months of trauma after the Camp Fire are behind us. New challenges lie ahead. We move back into our home. Water, gas, and electricity are restored. We begin the plan of restoring our home to the new normal. We have joined a small group of those who fled the fire and are returning to the homes that were spared destruction. Those who have returned are the first pioneers back up the hill to attempt to restore a normal life in homes needing some restoration surrounded by their neighbors' homes that were destroyed.

STM pastor, Fr. Godwin, ministers to STM parishioners and other parishes while residing at St. John's. Later on he is assigned to St. Thomas in Oroville. Fr. Francis at Our Divine Savior (ODS) becomes pastor to STM and celebrates a special weekly 1:00 Mass on Sundays for STM parishioners.

STM operations move from St. John's Newman Center to ODS. Our Divine Savior Parish led by Pastor, Fr. Francis, worked with the ODS Knights Council 13765 under the leadership of Grand Knight, Ed Grens. Ed and his brother Knights jumped into action to help with meals for our parishioners and by sharing their Council’s meeting room with the STM Paradise Council.

January 2: I complete the Annual survey of fraternal activity to Knights of Columbus showing how our council has stayed active despite the fire. Later in the year I accept the Columbian Award for the Council in recognition of our activities during the Camp Fire recovery. I meet another Knight at Chase Bank in Paradise to co-sign his recovery check from Columbian Charities. We set up a meeting with Servpro to survey damages to our home. We also arrange for our gardener to restore our landscaping to what it was before the fire.

January 18: Meeks installs new insulation in our attic, a minor issue compared to our neighbors who lost everything.

January 21: Knights from STM and ODS councils joined forces to set up, serve, and clean up the spaghetti dinner for our St. Thomas More Parishioners.

January 31: Forty-seven thank you notes went out in January to friends, relatives, church communities, Knights of Columbus councils, assemblies, and chapters.

February 1: Deacon Ray resigns as chaplain from K of C:

Greetings my brother Knights, It is with regrets that I must resign from my position as Chaplain for the council. Because of the ongoing issue of recovery from the fire, and all that entails, along with the responsibilities I have with St. Thomas More in working through the recovery for our parishioners, as well as my work in the same regard with the Diocese of Sacramento, I am not able to do justice to the position and the attention it deserves. Sincerely in Christ, Deacon Ray

We will share our small profit with Knights of Columbus charities.

November 22: The Enterprise Record reports that most of the lots in Paradise have been cleared of debris. Nearly one third of those who lost their homes would like to return, except that 60 percent of them were underinsured and might not be able to afford rebuilding costs. Existing homes are overpriced for many. A massive effort to remove over 300,000 trees that were destroyed in the Camp Fire will begin in January. Most trees will be removed within a year.

November 28: Thanksgiving

December 8: We hold a town hall meeting for STM parishioners seeking input on how our parish will grow, recover, and spread the Good News in the Paradise Community:

End of year reflections: A year ago we had not been allowed to reoccupy our home. Now we enjoy the warmth of our woodstove and look around us at our home restored inside and outside. The fire also reminds us of the destruction and turmoil of the past year. We await the installation of a whole house generator to deal with random black outs in the New Year.

The neighborhood is still abuzz with trucks, tractors, and disposal equipment clearing the last lot in our neighborhood. RVs have moved back to lots cleared of debris waiting for springtime construction.

Our neighbors who plan to rebuild, have cleared their lot but cannot let go of the hulk of a burned out truck which brings back memories for them of better times and past adventures.

PG & E subcontractors tear up our streets to replace aging power and gas lines. Road blocks are a daily nuisance but bring hope of improved infrastructure, removal of falling trees, and clearing for new constructions.

A few blocks away, there's hope for the New Year as a neighbor is framing a new home despite the cold, the rain and the muddy conditions. The frame stands in stark contrast to the empty lots on the same street.

The first wave of stalwart, pioneering Paradise Camp Fire survivors have returned living in mobile homes in the mud planning for better days. Their resiliency is evident in the Christmas decorations surrounding their improvised lodgings. They refuse to give up and are determined to celebrate the Christmas season.

We pray for better times for all these pioneers in the New Year.
